Well, what can I say, after years of Nintendo rying the whole online bit, with the NES, the N64, and the GCN, FInally, they have a fully supported online gaming service for all to use, but is it any good? Well my review of it comming up in 5, 4, 3, 2, NOW!
alright, the Nintendo Wi-fi connection has some good things runnig for it, and that is that its free, and easy to set up, and thats about it, i mean, the online experience is far from fun, becasue you spend most the time waiting for the network to find someone for you to play, and when that happens, with most of the games, you have about a %40 chance of instantly being disconnected and having to re-wait the tedious opponet finder session, which, I might Add, can take up to 10 minutes, long after you interest in actually playing the game has fadded, Now the NWFC (Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection)is generally fun the first few times you play it, or when an online DS game comes out, becasue that when everyone is playing, but after that, people start to get good and turn people away from playing the game, a great example of this is Mario Kart DS. Now the first few times I played this game online, it was really fun, I'll admit that, but now i never play it becasue of 1) when people start losing they disconnect, and 2) Theres never anyone on the Mario Kart online to play, so it takes forever, if ever for the network to find someone. The NWFC has these things called friend codes, they allow you to register people in your friend roster and play against them online, ya okay, that isn't such a big problem, but the problem is, is that The NWFC doesn't support game rooms, and, once you play someone, on most games, it doesn't ask if you want to register them in your friend roster, so theres almost noway of building an online community, which is what i guess nintendo was trying to do, but my issue is, if you need to know the person to get their friend code, whats the point of an online, beacause why dont you just go to your friend house or something, and play a wireless multiplyer match, its faster, and doesnt use your intenet bandwidth. See some online forums (like this one) allow you to trade friend codes with people, which is convenient, but Nintendo doesn't allow that on their site, nope, the fact that they dont even trust their own online network to be safe enough, they wont allow you to trade FC's on their own forums. Games like Metroid are heading in the right direction, becasue you can add people into your rivals roster, which is kinda like building some sort of community, you can check if their online, which is also good for an onlin community. Now, continueing on with the FC's, the friend codes make render some online modes in game completly useless without them. Here, let me expain. Animal Crossing on the DS. Now that game has Wi-fi, but its completely unuseable unless you have someone registerd on your friend code roster, which again, Nintendo doesnt support on their own forum, so you have to go else where, and once you get said FC, you must then, make sure you both have it, and choose and appointed time to connect, unless you want to leave your gate open, which then means you have to leave your DS on all the time. Now, you would think that Nintendo would learn and say, Hey, this is a major inconvenience for people, but no, they go ahead and do the same thing in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Making the online Useless, unless you do the samething that i just said for animal crossing, I mean, ya i said this befor but, if your going to add onlien to a game, and make it so that a person cant even use it unless they know someone else with a copy of the game, whats the point in making it online, wireless does the same, and a better job of, the online service. Now in pokemon, theres this place called the battle tower, is supposedly online, but all it is is that it downloads your opponets, so baisically, you just playing the computer, using your opponets pokemon, which inturn makes no difference becasue all pokemon are limited to being only level 50's, and if thast not enough, you cant even add Peoples friendcodes from there, again, making the online feature completly useless, as well as the Global trading system, that is a feature that is online, but you cant trade FC's there, oh no, but it tells you what province/state and what country said trade partner lives in, hmm. anyways, so ends my ranting review, and unless Nintendo shapes up and makes their online better and more community based, their gonna be losing alot of online, and potential online goers, I just hope online for the Wii proves better, but so far with Pokemon Battle Revolution it sure hasn't. I'll review the Wii online when More Online Wii games surface, but for now, the DS online get a measly 4/10
