The second installment for the DS of the popular Castlevania series. Konami sure did it this time. After the great reviews for Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait Of Ruin takes us back to its roots with the good old crack of the whip and vampires!

PLOT: The year is 1945. Dracula’s castle has appeared yet again. It is up to two young heroes to stop Dracula. Jonathan Morris and his friend Charlotte team up to take Dracula down. But little do they know, Dracula is not the Castle’s ruler at this point. A new vampire name Brauner seeks to use Dracula’s power to rain hell on humanity. He has beef with humans as WWII claimed the lives of his two daughters. Jonathan and Charlotte must stop him!
Game Quality: Classic Castlevania 2D platformer. It is really a lot like previous games. Going through the castle, gaining armor, weapons, and spells that help you on your quest. This game will not disappoint. Looking at the completed map of Dracula’s castle, it seems to be quite large with lots of areas to explore. Then you get to the paintings. Each painting is at least ½ the size of Dracula’s castle. This game is huge! It has lots of areas to go through and play. One of the gimmicks that the game has is the ability to use two players at once. You switch between Jonathan and Charlotte Through the game and can use your partner in fights and special DUAL attacks where you team up to make a very strong attack. The button configuration is quite easy to handle and master making the experience just a whole lot better. Each level has specific music to go with it as well. Each painting looks and sounds totally different. Like most of the Castlevania games, bosses are a big part to the game. These boss battles are sweet (especially when you get to the nest of evil) they won’t disappoint. 5/5 squares

Graphics: the graphics have been updated since Dawn of Sorrow. The backgrounds are all 3D as well as some enemies. Badies and people have a bit shaper look to them too. The graphics aren’t amazing, but they are actually quite good. They suit the game perfectly and if they tried to make them more 3D-like (New Super Mario Bros.) then everything would appear blurry. There really isn’t anything more I can say about the Graphics on this game. 4.5/5

In closing, this game ROCKS! If you own a DS, get this game! If you don’t, buy a DS and get this game. It isn’t for the really little kids either as there is plenty of gore to please those of you who want a little spice. I mean, in a game about Vampires, why wouldn’t there be blood? The bountiful badies and bosses add to the game’s fun.

Quality: 5/5
Graphics: 4.5/5
FINAL SCORE: 9.5/10

If you liked this one, I highly recommend you get its predecessor as well. Dawn of sorrow is equally as good. the graphics aren't quite as good, but the game play is almost second to none on the DS
